Bring the Sauna Back to Muizenberg

The beach-hut sauna became a place to warm up, recover and connect. We are asking the City to consider a safe, inclusive and financially sustainable return that adds public value to Muizenberg’s beachfront.

Why it is gone

The former HotHuts beach-hut sauna can no longer operate in its old setting. The City of Cape Town says eight huts were removed and are being replaced as part of the Muizenberg beachfront upgrade. The promenade is also being set back by about two metres in response to rising seas and storm surges. The City says this work began in February 2025 and is due for completion in December 2026.

Why it mattered

For swimmers, surfers, neighbours and visitors, the beach-hut sauna offered warmth and recovery after cold water. More than that, it created an unusually easy place for people to meet. This petition is about the public value of that experience—not preserving one structure exactly as it was.

What we are asking

We are asking the City of Cape Town and Subcouncil 19 to open a transparent feasibility process for a safe, inclusive, environmentally responsible and financially sustainable return. A future sauna would need to fit the upgraded beachfront and work through an appropriate community or operator partnership.

A responsible return

The petition does not assume a site, operator or final design. A credible process should test public access, coastal and environmental constraints, safety, maintenance, costs, governance and the relationship with other beachfront users before a decision is made.

What happens next

Confirmed signatures create a visible community signal. The anonymous impact survey adds evidence about how people used the sauna and what a responsible return should prioritise. Together, they can support a better-informed conversation with the relevant public bodies and possible partners.
